TAMPA It looks like Jared Allen, the NFL sack leader last year, will leave Minnesota and possibly head to Tampa Bay for a visit early this week. Don’t get too excited, though, Bucs fans. Allen’s reasons for leaving Minnesota are almost entirely legal.
The NFL has a rule for players like Allen, who has been designated the Kansas City Chiefs franchise player. It says they can visit other teams and look for a better deal but their visits cannot last more than 48 hours.
Since Allen arrived in Minneapolis sometime Friday afternoon, he has to leave sometime today. That doesn’t mean, though, that contract talks between Allen and the Vikings are breaking off. Nor are trade talks between the Vikings and Chiefs seemingly in danger of breaking off.
We’re not quite sure where the contract talks stand but the Minneapolis Star Tribune says the trade talks are ongoing and that the Vikings have offered the Chiefs their first-round pick in this year’s draft (No. 17 overall) and one of their third-round selections (either pick No. 73 or pick No. 82).
That’s not necessarily good news for the Bucs. The Bucs first-round selection is No. 20 overall and they don’t have a spare third-round pick to offer like the Vikings.
If the reports of what the Vikings are offering are accurate the Bucs will probably have to sweeten the pot significantly with a young player or two to beat the Vikings in the trade portion of the deal. Then there’s the problem of signing Allen.
We’re not hearing much on what it is the Vikings are offering Allen but he’s believed to be seeking a deal similar to the six-year $70 million deal that Dwight Freeney of the Colts signed. The fact that he spent two full days in Minneapolis tells you the Vikings must be offering something in that range.
At the very least, though, it looks like the Bucs will get their shot at Allen. That’s better than having no shot at all.

The glass is half empty. Forget about this guy. The Bucs NEVER win in these deals; and I just can’t believe that KC will give him up.

Why does everyone keep saying, “don’t do this move, sign the next Sapp instead.” Uhhhh.... where exactly is “the next Sapp”. W. Sapp was a once in a generation player - there is no next Sapp. That’s like Packers saying, let’s bring in the next QB to set every league record now that Favre has retired. It doesn’t work that way. When a player of Allen’s stature becomes available - go for it. Very similar to when we landed S. Rice - a player who took us over the top and had a monster year the Super Bowl season.

I heard a rumor that Allen and the vikings actually agreed on a deal and I guess we’ll be going to the SUPERBOWL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We’re stacked at the DE position. Why even waste a breath on Allen. We should start Greg White next year. He could rack up 15 sacks if starting. We need the next Sapp lining up at DT. Not another DE to throw in the mix.

I agree with you Brandon. There’s too many other needs right now. Too heavy a price for one player. I like the draft and build philosophy better. A free agency wr would be better, since we can’t develop one...we should spend money or draft pick on a wr coach...lol

Yeah, Jared Allen is an avid fisherman and knows Minnie has the best fishing in the states. 20,000 lakes, snow, 4 seasons, skiing (snow and water) snowmobiling, snowboarding, you name it Allen will choose MN. Better contract, better owner, better fans, the Vikes William tandom and AP on offensive blows TB.

It would be idiotic to give anything in trade for Allen AND be forced to sign him to a huge contract. That would mean were would essentially be paying for him twice, once in compensation to the team and the other in compensation to the player. Bad business.

The Bucs can still offer thier 1st & 3rd, plus a player (Simms or other) to get the deal done. But I don’t hear about the other side of this, which is that Allen has a say ? ..and we have some good things to offer:
Similar contract dollars
Warm weather
No State Income Tax
New facility
Playing on top 3 defense
Better coaching
Real grass vs turf in dome
Agent lives in Tampa

We don’t need Allen that bad the Chiefs want to much for that guy.
We need to try and land Lito Sheppard.
That would be the icing on the cake and
pick up WR in the 1st. Am I wrong?????
