TAMPA - There is a right way to recruit Plant quarterback Robert Marve and a wrong way.
Alabama may have figured out the wrong way.
The Crimson Tide picked up a verbal commitment from San Antonio Churchill quarterback Nick Fanuzzi, who had previously committed to Miami, on Monday. Fanuzzi visited Alabama last weekend and left believing Alabama would be the perfect fit for him.
However, Alabama also was actively recruiting Marve, who is committed to the same school, but coach Nick Saban did not tell Marve he was looking for another quarterback. In fact, Marve was never informed about Fanuzzi’s commitment from a member of Alabama’s staff. The customary respectful gesture is for a college to tell a committed recruit when it plans to bring in another player who will compete for their position.
“Everybody does thing differently in terms of recruiting and that’s the way they [Alabama] chose to play it. I probably would have played it different than that, and certainly would have done it in a more tactful way, but that was their choice,” Plant football coach Robert Weiner said. “A lot of things happen during the pressure situations of recruiting, and the one thing I’ve tried to teach Robert through this process is this a a cut-throat business, and people don’t always do things with honesty and integrity, but from our end, we will always be up front.
“I don’t see it [Marve visiting other schools] as breach of commitment. There was no flux for what he was going to do. He was committed to Alabama and Mike Shula, and he never looked at another school, but they are no longer there. He was still committed to Alabama. He was going to the dance and planned to dance with the girl he bought there, but things changed.”

What the Bama intellectuals fail to hone up to is that Marve had every intention to go to Bama BEFORE Mike Shula got blindsided, but the corrupt Bama decision makers and well as the equally back-stabbing Nick “the Slick” Saban was already negociating his new contract in Tuscalosa. It was professed for 3 weeks in the papers and on Feinbaumns radio show something big was going to happen. Slick Nicky was just being “HONEST” with his Dolphin players...supposedly. Not only has 4 star Marve moved on, but so has 3 star Murdock. Also according to 5-star Mike Ford, the last straw was the firing of Coach Shula.
No three times now means NO Murdock, No Marve and No Ford.

Mr. Harvey. Maybe you’ve never heard of Bart Starr, Kenny Stabler and Joe Namath. Crap, the last coach from Alabama, Mike Shula, played there. I like the U to but your information is not very factual.
P.S. Think Sabans pipeline in South Fla. is now trashed. You betcha.

Mr. Marve! Not only do we want you down south to wear that “U” on your helment! WE NEED YOU! Alabama’s program is going no where atleast for a couple yrs. Our program down in Miami will be right back in the mix of things this yr. Yeah i did say this yr 2007! Robert, we welcome you with open arms! Its all about da “U”! Your pass to the NFL and your pass to a GREAT education!

I have a unique perspective on this. I had one twin son graduate from Alabama and the other from Miami. Alabama blindsided Mike Shula and then hired a dsihonest coach in Nick Saben. Marve’s commitiment was to Shula as much as it was to ‘Bama. Perhaps now that he has seen the new way things are being done in T-Town and experienced the real U of Miami he appears to be changing his mind. Can’t say I blame him. He did state that he and his parents were impressed with the honesty of Randy Shannon. Mr. Marve I really beleive yow will be the next Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Vinnie Testerverdi, Steve Walsh, Geno Toretta and Ken Dorsey. You will make MIami GREAT again. We in South Florida welcome you to The U!

Dear Mr Football! First of all I would like to congratulate on all of your high school accomplishments! Great job! Next I would like to say that the fans in S Florida would really love to see you in the “Orange and Green” It would be an honor to have you. I myself would love to have you here to restore the winning tradition on HURRICANE FOOTBALL!

Bottom line: What’s Alabama’s loss, is CLEARLY our gain. Come on down to the U, Robert. Better academics, better location, program on the rise, closer to home… plus, this program is nothing short of an NFL pipeline. What’s the last “big time” player to hit the NFL from ‘Bama? Shaun Alexander? Ok, then before him, who? Last QB from there that was worth a darn? My point exactly. C’mon down to Coral Gables and continue a tradition in excellence, Mr Football.

"Only difference is the coaches at Miami told Nick they were bringing in 2 QB’s in this class and Nick was totally OK with it. Saban didnt tell Marve that and there lies the difference”
Exactly what I am talking about . People trying to pump little Marvie was lied to angle . Saban didn’t tell Marve he was bringing in another QB ??? Can you prove that ? No .
Here is what CAN be proven . Saban said in his first nationally televised press conference as head coach that if players supposedly committed to the Tide shopped around so would Bama . Marve is on this very site in a video from two days ago wearing Miami gear from his toenails to his eyebrows talking about his “soft , soft verbal” to Alabama . Backup plan executed .

Bama fans and Saban deserve each other.

Its funny how Nick Fanuzzi was committed to Miami and all of a sudden he is taken visits just like Marve. Only difference is the coaches at Miami told Nick they were bringing in 2 QB’s in this class and Nick was totally OK with it. Saban didnt tell Marve that and there lies the difference. Nick Saban again shows his true colors. But does it really suprise anyone that Saban did this? His credibility has been lacking for years. I think Marve and his coach are only now finding out what many already knew about Mr. Saban.

I’ll throw an interesting twist into all of this .USF has been a third runner in this race. With Alabama slipping , Marve should strongly consider USF, a program on the rise as opposed to a program on the fall. The Miami mystique is over. He would be a hometown hero here. Coach Leavitt is a proven quantity.Granted he would have to sit for a while, but the Bulls needed a top notch backup to Grothe in case of injury.

The “deceit” accusations are bull . On the very first day Saban gave his press conference he was asked if the scholarship promises made by the former staff would be honored . He said every single offer would honred be BUT in cases of a waffling commit “If you shop , we will shop “.
Marve made a big production out of “shopping” in spite of that .Hardly looked like a Bama commit to me as he talked about his “soft , soft verbal” to Bama wearing head to toe Miami gear on this very site .
Why whine about it now ... just because he didn’t get the chance to string Bama along till Signing Day and leave the program without a QB in this class with some last minute stupid hat switch ? Give me a break ...

Wearing a Miami Hat and Shoes on a televised interview doesn’t equal a Bama commitment and anybody that thinks so is an idiot!
There is no difference in what Saban did and what Miles did here, but nobody is crying about Miles, are they?
“LSU coach Les Miles, who took what he thought was a clandestine trip to Dallas a year ago to lobby his team for the Cotton Bowl in case it lost the Peach Bowl, is not happy with Davis. Miles, similar to former LSU coach Gerry DiNardo, has a policy that once you commit to LSU you can no longer take visits.”
I think that all coaches feel this same way. When Marvypoo wanted to play footsie with all of the girls in the dance instead of the one he claimed to be sold on, he got what he deserved.

While accusations of Alabama mishandling this might be appropriate, some blame must go to Marve as well.
How do you think Bama fans felt yesterday to look at this very site and watch a video of Marve decked out in Miami gear while saying he was still a Bama commit?
While I can understand these kids taking all their officials, I do not understand the concept of a “soft, soft,” verbal commit as Marve called it. He was expecting Alabama to hold his spot while he courted three or four other teams. “soft, soft verbal” sounds like no commitment at all.
I really wish him well, and was looking forward to him in Crimson, but it may not be meant to be.

I wasn’t going to respond to this article until I realized that the author is a supossed journalist. I certainly understand some bias when writing for the local in-state newspaper, but Mr. Richardson not only lost his objectivity, he made a blatant misrepresentation of the facts. Since I am not privy to what may or may not have been said between Nick Saban and Robert Marve, I can’t comment on whether he (Marve) was/is still being recruited or if he still wanted to play for Alabama. But I do know this, good recruiters (and Alabama has three of the best) can usually tell if a prospect is honestly undecided or if he has serious leanings toward another university.

I have it from the players at Bama that Marve was not liked by the other players. He seemed to be too “FULL OF HIMSELF”.I’m glad Bama signed Fanuzzi. If it cost us Marve so be it!! Its high time a head coach lets these little primadonas know who is in charge! Perhaps this will send a signal to other kids that if your heart is not at Bama then don’t let the door hit you in your ass as you are sent to other places. There was a time when a kid went to a school because he wanted to help the school and not so much himself. Bring back the good old days. Marve should remember character matters.

Marve is finding out first hand what all of us in Miami already know; Tricky Nick will do what’s best for him, including his occassional fibs! Alabama will get what they deserve, watch!
Posted by Joe Wiley, Elora , Tn on 01/22 at 11:15 PM
Exactly on the comments about Marve shooting himself in the foot with one addition . Not only did he make a BIG parade out of shopping himself around to other schools he showed up for an extensive interview for a local TV station wearing Miami gear from head to toe .
His high school coach is a joke crying like Marve got shafted and talking about courtesy and how “up front” they were . Fact is Mr. Marve played cutesy games stringing Bama along and got gamed himself . Bama doesn’t need a prima donna QB ... it needs team players . Good riddance Marve , welcome aboard Fanuzzi ...

I have followed Marve’s recruitment closely and at every stop, and with every interview he has handled himself with class and integrity. He has always said he is an Alabama committ. But what you see is just the ongoing pattern of deceit, and the two-faced behavior of a Nick Saban run program. Now I hope Robert Marve signs elswhere.

Rob Marve, Miami really wants and needs you. Coach Shannon is an honorable man and you loved the school and the city of Miami in your recent visit. Just pull the trigger and commit Robert; you will be in the league in 3 to 5 years!

Marve,
Perhaps Mr Florida is more appropriate, UM is calling! While Nick Fanuzzi was a QB we wanted, when you considered us following Shula’s firing, All I have read on the S Florida sites is how much you would add to the future of the Miami program. We may pursue other QB options for depth, but you should be a lock to start in a year or 2.
Consider other former Canes to start after learning for 2 years.. Testaverde, Walsh, Erickson, Toretta, and Dorsey!
As for Alabama’s handling of the situation, I don’t see a problem in talking to other potential recruits, but be honest and up front about it. Another hit on Nick Saban’s handling with football affairs.

Showing up for an interview decked out in Miami gear really showed his level of commitment to Bama, coach weiner. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Did Marve’s coach miss this little article from this newspaper?
Marve Liked Alabama, But Still Shopping
http://www.tboblogs.com/index.php/sports/comments/marve-liked-alabama-but-still-shopping
“Plant senior quarterback Robert Marve enjoyed his recruiting visit to Alabama, but he is still not ready to wear a Crimson Tide uniform.”
Did I miss something, was there a secret message in the article to the Alabama staff saying Marve was firmly committed to Alabama?
From what I have read, since Fanuzzi’s commitment, Robert Marve has said he is still a soft commit to Alabama. Marve also said that the Tide staff has contacted him and they still want him to come to Bama.
Posted by Jim Peoples, Shreveport LA on 01/22 at 08:51 PM
What a bunch of crap! If Marve was committed he should have said so. Instead, he chose to look into other options. He was told on his visit that if you’re going to shop around then Alabama will shop around. He never came out and said he was definitely going to Bama! He said he was still looking into his options. So his indicision forced Bama to cover itself! It’s his own fault! If he would have committed and stopped playing games, it would have been totally different!

Alabama fans are crazy! Fanuzzi could not hold Robert Marve gym bag. This young man is the real deal!! He is so accurate on the move it’s scary. A young Brett Frave scary! “U†will see! You can believe the rankings if you want to. There was a QB rank higher than him in the same area? The state of Alabama should call in the FBI because you were robbed!! Go Canes!!! I’m begging you to put the “U†on your schedule!!!
