Florida State’s softball team received several honors from the Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday, the day before the start of the ACC Tournament in Tallahassee. FSU freshman OF Monica Montez (Corona, Calif.) was named ACC Freshman of the Year, the sixth Seminole to win the award.
“I was definitely shocked, even though some time has set in, I’m still shocked,’’ Montez said. “This is a tremendous honor. Coming in I never thought about winning any awards, all I wanted to do was help the team win.’’
Montez joins FSU players Tiffany McDonald (2005), Veronica Wootson (2004), Jessica van der Linden (2001), Kristy Hull (1995) and Shamalene Wilson (1993) in winning the award.
Overall, FSU placed five players on the All-ACC Softball team, the most of any school in the conference.
Senior SS Yuruby Alicart made first-team, while Montez, McDonald, Wootson and junior OF Whitney Buckmon were second-team selections.
