ACC: Eight Is Enough

Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden got his wish, as did several other Atlantic Coast Conference football coaches who opposed the idea of the league adding a ninth conference game to the schedule.

Gathered in Amelia Island during their annual spring meetings, the ACC athletic directors opted not to add another game to the schedule.

“We listened to the coaches and we’ve backed off the nine games,” Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips told ESPN.com. “It’s off the table for discussion.’’

Bowden, who had voiced his opposition to the idea earlier, reiterated his stance Monday at the meetings.

“I can’t think of a single reason that a football coach would want it,’’ Bowden said according to ESPN.com.

Thanks for the quick response Scott. I understand why he thinks that way, though as a fan, you miss the anyone, anytime, anyplace mentality…

Kevin,

Coach Bowden’s main reason for not wanting a ninth conference game is he views it as a competitive disadvantage for the league in terms of bowls. He contends why should the ACC have to play nine conference games and beat up on each other, while other major conferences such as the SEC play only eight. Makes sense. Plus, bowl games provide a lot of money for the league, so teams obviously have a better chance of finishing bowl eligible with a patsy on the schedule rather than N.C. State or Miami. Anyway, hope that answers your question. Thanks for the message.

Hey Scott. Any chance you could ask Coach Bowden why you wouldn’t want it?
