Academy of the Holy Names/Jesuit swim coach Bill Shaffer stayed up until midnight on Monday crunching the numbers, trying to figure out the best lineup for his teams first dual meet of the season against Sickles.
Shaffer’s strategy paid off. Academy narrowly beat the Sickles girls team 97-88, despite the fact that the Gryphons placed first in nine of the 12 events. The Jaguars depth won out in the end.
“This will give them a lot of confidence now,” Shaffer said.
The boys competition wasn’t as close. Jesuit defeated Sickles, a team that did not drop a regular-season meet last year, 124-59.
Double winners Tuesday night were Jesuit’s Chris Swanson, in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and Dylan Attal in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly and from Sickles Trey Went III (50 free, 500 free), Andrew Howard (100 free, 100 back), Katie Westbrook (500 free, 200 free), Katie Cook (100 free, 100 breaststroke) and Kelli Swanson (200 IM, 100 back).
