After beating Elfers Christian Friday night, 39-27, Academy at the Lakes’ six-man football team has earned a postseason playoff spot.
“The kids are maturing, getting a little better and a lot of them are coming back,” head coach John Castelamare said. “It’s good for the school. They’re all fired up and it’s really working nice for them, And the kids feel nice when they go to school on Monday.”
The Wildcats (5-2) have ripped off four consecutive victories, the latest came in something of a nail biter for the squad Friday night. After jumping ahead 26-0 at the half, Elfers roared back, capitalizing on a handful of Academy at the Lakes mistakes.
“It became a little war there from the half,” Castelamare said. “(Elfers) fought hard and came back a little bit. Our young guys had to grow up quick.”
Running back Jarrett Harvey tallied 236 yards on the ground, while quarterback Austin Carlson helped to guide the team up and down the field.
According to Castelamare, Carlson has been calling roughly 60 percent of the offensive plays. Castelamare will call a formation or give a general play and Carlson takes it from there – reading the defense and making adjustments at the line of scrimmage.
“I’m proud of them,” Castelamare said. “They’re doing pretty good and they’re working hard.”
The Wildcats will travel to Lakeside Christian on Friday and then host Zephyrhills Christian the following week. Academy at the Lakes will wrap up the regular season Oct. 15 when they travel to Clearwater Academy.
