If you look back at what the Bucs have done in free agency so far you’ll notice a pattern. Almost every move they’ve made so far has been geared toward shoring up the offense.
That was by design, according to Bucs general manager Mark Dominik, and while there are still some needs on that side of the ball, the Bucs will start paying a little more attention to defense now.
Don’t look for them to make a big splash there, though. You get the feeling from listening to Dominik, who spent about 15 minutes with the beat writers earlier today, that he likes what he’s got here.
Though their plans include re-signing safety Jermaine Phillips and cornerback Phillip Buchanon and adding some pieces elsewhere, they seem content with the competition they’ll have for starting jobs elsewhere.
Here are a couple of nuggets from Dominik’s sit-down, in which he discussed the plan at linebacker, defensive tackle and how the Bucs hope to go about improving their pass rush.
On the plan at linebacker: We’re still excited about Quincy Black; Geno Hayes flashed a lot last year in his ability to play. Adam Hayward, we’ve got a Rod Wilson, Matt McCoy, Jamall Johnson who we signed form the CFL. So we’ve got a good group of players that we think can compete at the positions, and we like their athleticism; their speed to cover grass, cover ground. And we intend to give them every opportunity. But a lot will be said in March and April to get a feel for how they’re doing, how they’re learning the system, and we’ll go from there.
On the plan at under tackle: We have Chris Bradwell, Dre Moore, Greg Peterson - all young players that fit this new Jim Bates system in terms of defensive tackles and what we’re asking them to do. That was a big part of why we wanted to get Ryan Sims signed prior to free agency. He’s a young, bigger-bodied guy that can push the pocket. With Peterson and Dre Moore, they’re big-bodied guys that are - I think - able to step into those roles, and they’ll get their opportunity to step into those roles.
On improving the pass rush: Part of it is the system that Coach Bates puts them in. Again, just like we were talking about with Ryan Sims and the Chris Hovans and the other guys that are under contract now. You create pressure in the pocket so you can push the pocket back and pin your ears back off the edge. Then you move Gaines Adams out on a straight line and you say, “Good luck quarterback, cause we’re coming.” So a lot of it comes from there. And we’re expecting a lot of big things from Gaines Adams. And I think he can deliver them.

i think Black, Hayes, and Hayward can be good LB’s IMO..but peterson and dre moore at DT…not sold on that one yet, i think we need to make a splash at that possession either in FA or in the draft.

I’m not sure that a change in scheme can make players that much better. Moore was demoted to the practice squad for laziness. That could motivate him. The changes won’t make him better. It’s up to him. So many fans whined about the lack of excitement in our O, I’m beginning to fear they may be content with a mediocre D. You can’t have first-time starters at maybe half of the positions and plan on being in the top 10. McFadden and Johnson could go a long way. Sign them.

Are you kidding me? Backups are going to come in and improve this defense, a defense that collapsed at the end of the year? There is no pass rush. Remember the last time we stood pat? It lead to the ‘06 season. Look for a repeat next year. The other thing is this, are you telling me that the GM can only work on one thing at a time? Mark needs help and he needs it quick, but don’t look for Culverhouse Part 2 to give him that help.

For one, this is NOT going to be Monte Kiffin’s “sit back in the zone” cover-2. Bates is going to bring in a more blitz-heavy system than we’ve EVER seen in Tampa. Jim Bates knows what he’s got…and what he doesn’t got. What he lacks is a 4-man line good enough to pressure the QB alone…so he’ll blitz more. And, in case you haven’t noticed, 4-3 teams that blitz a lot often have marginal talent at LB - because they’re not playing like traditional LBs all the time [see Philly…Chris Gocong, anyone?].
And, 2, read between the lines. Do you really think Tampa is going to talk about who they want on defense to the media? A little smoke and mirrors, for the win!

TB fans the new GM & Coaching staff does have a plan and I like it. Now lets everyone stop complaining about Tampa don’t get FA’s.What does D.Ward mean. For once in a very long time Tampa will have a ground attack along with passing and kick off & return attack. Now GM & Coaches go after Jason Taylor , and get Jay Culter to battle with McGown for the starting job. If we get that DE and QB. Then in the draft get the best DT,WR,LB,OL & corner available.GO Bucs

Shawn…I totaly agree..One other thing. I seem to remember when Mr. Rudd was a Backup..Very few people come into the Nfl as starters. With the housecleaning they now have to step up..just hope they paid attention!

Mark is right backups can step up and perform at high levels. The Bucs have some talent on defense and Quincy Black reminds me of Barrrett Ruud. A third round pick who was on the bench for two years before starting. Black has a lot of talent and should perform well. Geno Hayes also has a lot of talent and if he starts he will have a solid year. Then Dre Moore tons of talent with no work ethic what so ever. If he works hard he could be a special DT in this league. I think we should bring in Tank Johnson at DT he is young and big. He could be a ppor mans version of Big Albert. In a 4-3 defense he is a dependable player and since leaving Chicago he has been an angel.

I’m saying the odds of having around 5 or 6 back-ups on D starting and succeeding are slim. If a team got 4 1st rounders, 6 2nd rounders, and 8 3rd rounders to build a D, I doubt it would be good its first year. I know some of ours have been around learning, but playing is what really matters. I’m not writing the season off, yet, like many in here. There’s still hope. I just think we need to add a quality WR, a back-up QB, and a D lineman and CB before the draft. We would still be short of 80 players even after the draft if they did that much. The crop grows smaller and smaller every day. Washington, Johnson, Ward, T.J., and some others I’m sure I’m forgetting all got signed in around the last 24 hours. Time matters.

Dre Moore was one of the strongest men at the Combine before last year’s draft. So was Zuttah. One played above expectation. The other didn’t even make the team. We really don’t have that many draft picks to fill all the slots we need to fill. Add to that, the confusion of learning a brand new system. I can see waiting a year to draft the QB of the future when there will be more to choose from, unless they take Freeman in rd 1, which is too high, but he will be gone early in 2d rd. Well, all I can say is that Custer had a plan too. He divided his force in two and entered into enemy territory with no recon intel. Custer was slaughtered. The Bucs? We’ll see.

P.S. It’s one thing for the coach and GM to have a plan. It’s another thing for the fans to witness their execution.

Gruden wouldn’t let the younger guys play until one of the elders got hurt, i.e., Earnest Grahan. I’m sure we have some untapped talent, but I am also discouraged with losing some key FA’s to other teams. I am NOT impressed with this new GM. He moves way too slow and can’t put together winning deals. And Michael Clayton is the best he can find at WR? What an idiot!
Suggest removalPor (Erik) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Go get Cutler, PERIOD!
Suggest removalPor (Tyler Ellrodt) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)
I would like solutions at CB: Greer, Bodden, McFadden, Buchannon; LB: Angelo Crowell, Marques Harris, Clay Matthews, Brian Cushing, or James Laurinaitis; WR: Devery Henderson, Laveranues Coles, Justin McCareins, Koren Robinson, Brandon Lloyd, Ashley Lelie, or Marvin Harrisson; DE: Jason Taylor, Igor Olshansky, or Vonnie Holliday; DT: Shaun Cody, Brandon McKinney, or Ellis Wyms, Shaun Rodgers; and finally at QB: Derek Anderson, Byron Leftwich, Josh Freeman.
Suggest removalPor (Tyler Ellrodt) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Out of that list I would want any of the CB’s, any of the LB’s, D. Henderson or L. Coles at WR, J. Taylor or I. Olshansky at DE, Shaun Rodgers or E. Wyms at DT, and D. Anderson or J. Freeman at QB. I know we can’t get all of these guys and might not get any of them but I would deffinately try to get as many of them as I could.
Suggest removalPor (greg) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Duminik: WR at no 19 or higher. Jets will pick at 17, be prepared to move up a couple of spots. Then DL or two. CB, LB and back-up QB if you can find one. Let Josh have legitimate shot. Another playmaking WR will open up the offense and take a load off McKown.

Go get CUTLER! Go BUCS!
Suggest removalPor (Todd) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Tyler,
Nice list..But you left out 1 DT That everybody is overlooking his name is…TANK JOHNSON !!!! TANK JOHNSON WOULD BE A GREAT FIT HERE!! He is eligable to be picked up.
Suggest removalPor (Tyler Ellrodt) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)
True, Tank Johnson would be good, but I am tired of hearing people complain that we get rid of stand up guys for guys with bad attitudes. I personally don’t believe that but lots of people do. I wonder how Tank would gel with our young team. I would give him a shot with a low risk high reward contract much like we gave Hovan and Stevns.
Suggest removalPor (Tyler Ellrodt) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)
Woops, Stevens, not Stevns ha.
Suggest removalPor (kyle mac) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)
A guy that I would bring in would be Olshansky. Listed at 6-6 305 he played D-end in the 3-4 so he has some burst, and could slide down to under tackle and sill be solid against the run. He also seems to have the one quality the bucs are looking for, youth.
