OK so it’s says 1-1 on the standings. And the Bucs won by more than two scores. But is anyone honestly happy with the Buccaneer performance today?
That game should have been put away by half-time, or at very least, the middle of the third quarter. But a combination of inept offense, stupid penalties and bonehead mistakes mean that talk show hosts and newspaper colmunists will be having a field day for the next 48 hours. I’d love to be at Jon Gruden’s press conference for this one.
The bright spark from today’s gloomy showing? Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn’s running. And I guess you have to give the line the credit but too many of Mr.September’s yards came after the first contact and were his efforts alone.
Was Brian Griese better than Jeff Garcia? Is it Luke McCown’s turn in the rotation next week? Griese was 5-1 when he got hurt in 2005 and began his latest stint as Buccaneer starter with another victory. But this was more the quarterbacking equivalent of winning 10-6 and giving up a bunch of runs in the middle innings.
The defense was out on the field for a very long time against a pretty poor offense and just when are the Bucs going to get any real pressure from the middle of their defensive line. The main objective would have been to stop Michael Turner which they did, but the last time a Buc nose tackle got a sack, Warren Sapp was involved.
Most Buc fans would have accepted a 1-1 start a fortnight ago. I saw enough promising things in New Orleans to be confident. But today, I saw enough worrying things to be more than just worried.
