ZEPHYRHILLS—Many of you may have seen, heard or read about Zephyrhills’ 28-0 win against Wesley Chapel and been a little surprised, considering how solid the Wildcats’ offense has been this year, and how dismal the Bulldogs’ offense had been.
But if you’re like me, you saw the score and asked yourself the following: When was the last time Wesley Chapel got shut out?
Remember, at the beginning of this decade, Wesley Chapel was the best team in Pasco County – going 35-8 from 2001-04, four of those losses coming in the state playoffs. They also avoided shutouts from 2005-07.
You have to go back to Sep. 24, 1999, in the midst of the Wildcats’ first-ever varsity campaign, when they fell to Clearwater Central Catholic 38-0.
The final tally: Wesley Chapel entered Bulldog Stadium on Friday having scored in 93 consecutive games, by far the longest streak in Pasco County (see chart below). But alas, the Bulldogs deserved the shutout, holding the Wildcats to less than 150 yards, sacking their quarterbacks six times and forcing an interception.
But it’s still worth the time to look back on the tremendous streak Coach John Castelamare and his teams put together for nearly 10 years. Here are some amazing stats from Wesley Chapel during the streak…
--Outscored its opponents 2627-1654 (a difference of 973 points). The average score in those games: Wesley Chapel 28, Opponent 18.
--Scored 15 or more points in 44 consecutive games (10/20/2000 through 10/29/2004)
--Most points in a single game: 71 vs. Pasco, 10/18/2003
--Fewest points allowed in an entire season: 93, 2001 (8.5 per game, 10-1 record)
--Opponents Shut Out During Streak: 15
Gulf (2001, 2005)
Hudson (2000, 2003)
Mitchell (2001, 2002, 2006)
Lake Placid (2002)
Land O’ Lakes (2001, 2004)
Ridgewood (2004)
River Ridge (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005)
Finally, the current scoring streaks in Pasco County (last shutout). Notice Wesley Chapel’s streak was more than twice as long as any other county team…
