ST. PETERSBURG— Derek Jeter was awarded first base in the seventh inning by home plate umpire Lance Barksdale, who ruled a pitch from Chad Qualls hit Jeter’s wrist, while replays showed it hit the knob of his bat and his wrist.
Joe Maddon argued and got the umpires to huddle. But once they ruled in Jeter’s favor, Maddon argued again, this time with more steam.
He was tossed.
Perhaps if MLB expands it use of instant replay like, say, the NFL, the umpires could have taken a look and seen the ball hit the knob of the bat.
Barksdale’s call proved big, because Curtis Granderson followed with a two-run homer to right field to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.

I have always held Derek Jeter in the highest level of respect.
Until now.
When booed by Rays fans in reaction to girlish squels of Yankee fans for “The Captain”, I refrained.
A-Roid, I boo. His entire career has been one enormous fraud perpetrated on MLB. But Jeter, no. He has been an honorable player throughout his illustrious career.
Until now.
“Jeter the Cheater” forever more. “Derek Cheater” from now on. No mercy for this shameless “Fraud of the Yankees” for cheating in a way never before done so shamelessly and with such a potential impact on the outcome of a pennant race.
Shame on Derek Jeter. He proved once and for all why the rest of the world HATES the Yankees, truly the Evil Empire.
