Newsome’s worst fears - that standout junior fullback Conner Powers would be lost for the season - didn’t become a reality on Wednesday when Powers made a trip to have an MRI done on his injured knee, which is a good thing for the Wolves. However, the timetable for Powers’ possible return is still in limbo.
Powers said the injury is to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his right knee. Powers was injured while being tackled in the first half of the Wolves’ victory last Friday against Leto. He said he originally thought it was a hamstring injury but that the knee began to swell in the days following the game.
Powers said the MRI results were to be reviewed on Thursday, but added the initial word he received from the doctor is that the ligament, which sits just behind the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee, was not torn. If that is the case and the injury doesn’t require surgery, Powers said he would be able to rehab the injury and return in a few weeks.
Newsome coach Kenneth Hiscock said Vince Pennington and Powers’ younger brother, Keller, would step into the fullback role in Newsome’s Wing-T offense for the time being. Newsome travels to Bloomingdale on Friday for a Class 5A-District 6 matchup.
