Steroid Testing In High Schools

In the wake of professional baseball’s steroid era, state legislators have pushed for requiring mandatory anabolic steroid tests for high school athletes. The three-year testing program would include all high school sports, beginning next year.

What are your thoughts on the proposed action? Should high school athletes be tested, or is this an invasion of privacy? Tell us what you think.

HOW DO I KNOW WHERE THE LINE IS BETWEEN WHAT I CAN USE (OVER THE COUNTER PRODUCTS) AND WHEN I MAY BE IN QUESTION???? IS THERE ANYWHERE I CAN SEE WHAT I CAN USE AND WHATS NON-PERMISSABLE AS A COMPETATIVE ATHLETE????

…CONTINUED As far as this being an invasion of privacy, I don’t really see that.  If you just go to school and they test you, then maybe that is an invasion of privacy.  But, as soon as you sign up for something knowing that they test, then that is in no way an invasion of privacy.  If you want to play sports on steroids go play somewhere else.  I am sure people think the money to be spent could be allocated to better areas, but this is only on a three year trial basis, and I think this is a very worthwhile direction to go.

…CONTINUED It could very well somewhat of a partial solution in the Big Leagues.  It will kind of set the tone for how it really is.  Also, I think it would even make younger kids that aren’t even in high school more aware about steroid use, just because it kind of hits a little closer to home now. I do think that there should be some kind of steroid testing done to high school athletes. I think it is important for the education system to promote and want to promote ethical ways. Since sports are such a big and important part of our culture, why not try to make it right? I have been out of high school for five years now, and steroids were pretty big back then.  So, with all the publicity steroids have gotten in this “steroids era”, I can only assume that this problem has become much larger. The athletes in high school today are the very same athletes who will be the professionals of tomorrow, so maybe if you instill the idea of testing in their minds now it might have a direct impact in professional sports in the future. i would think the teaching staffs would agree, the money would be better spent on something else more productive. Our school has gone without bleachers at the baseball complex for a year. My relative who is in a wheel chair cant even watch a game because there is know access

As a teacher, I feel that the money could be better spent. If the coach has suspicions, then why don’t they just send individual students for testing. It doesn’t need to be mandatory.

ATHLETES SHOULD BE TESTED BEFORE EACH SPORT THEY CHOOSE TO PARTICIPATE IN DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR.  MANY PEOPLE, INCLUDING ME, GREW UP WITH THE “OLD SCHOOL” IDEA THAT CHEATERS NEVER WIN.

Yes all students who play sports should be tested.

Absolutely - My it is my understanding that they are illeagle to use without a doctors perscription.  If a kid needs them and they are perscribed by a state certifice doctor - then OK.  Otherwise those using and selling illeaglly should be prosecuted by the leagle system.
Thx, Tim

I think not, we have too many laws and invasions of ones privacy now. If a teacher or parent suspects something going on they should report it and try to help the child. Let the parents make this decision about testing their children and getting them help.

Maybe add a mandatory after school “1 day class” to teach anyone getting into school athletics all the reasons not to get into taking these dangerous drugs and what could happen if they do.

Bring in D. Gooden or some people of this stature to teach them what drugs can and will do to their lives.

I think all HS athletes in all sports should be tested for each season they play.

I think All high School athletes should be tested for steroids. I know of about 14 students that I went to school with and they were all on steroids. That’s how they got scholar ships. cause they were muscular. But someone else who was a TEAM PLAYER and did what he was supposta do and be a team didnt get picked cause he wasnt as big as everyone else. So YES I do believe High school and College students should ALL be tested.
