A Pinellas-Pasco judge ruled last week that dogs are considered property.
That ruling - far from landmark, but accepted legal doctrine for centuries - may come as a surprise to pet owners, who spend heavily on their pets and consider pooches family members.
So what do you have to say about the fact that pets are the legal equivalent of a toaster, at least in courts?

The times they are a changing! It’s time to change the laws to protect all animals! I’m working on doing something about it, that’s why I ended up here! If you know of any organization that are working on passing new laws into effect regarding dog breeders please let me know. They have my vote.

If pets or animals are considered property, than how come people can be charged with animal cruelty? You wouldnt charge someone with abusing a tv or car. Everyone thats ever owned a pet knows that they are more than property. For most people pets are part of family, in my case they are like the kids my wife and I could never have.

Dog’s= they are getting more attention than foster children. Who makes there decisions for them are they kept in foster care or are they sent home with family & sometimes bad family. Is the meaning of caring for thier best interest based on money or love and which garegiver has more of which one? Is it money or love ?

Animals are not “just” property. They should not be considered in the same class as a lawn mower. Animals must be cared for, fed, housed. They can not be just left outside when we are finished with them. It takes a committment to own a pet. It takes nothing to own a computer or lamp or whatever. Pets should have their own classification. A living thing can’t just be considered property. I don’t care how hard hearted a person is, if they have a pet, they have responsibilites and these go above and beyond what you would do for a piece of property.

Your little pooches ARE property. If you don’t believe that, try suing for loss of consortium when little Fido gets run over by a truck. All you’ll get is the replacement cost, same as if your bike got run over. You animal lovers really need to get a life. Is it really healthy to French-kiss an animal that “cleans” itself with its own tongue? Can you say “bacteria?”

My pets are members of the family, but I dont sit them on top of the mantel for display or hang it up in the closet.

Considering pets as common property breaks my heart. How could you compare a living, breathing creature to a common piece of property such as a sofa? My heart goes out to the new owners that opened their hearts and rescued these animals from the death and destruction of Katrinia. In addition, if it is true that the dogs had heartworms and were neglicted prior to Katrina, I have no sympathy on the prior owners. GOOD LUCK NEW OWNERS ~ TAKE THIS ONE TO TRIAL!

I’m beginning to think Judge Andringa is down on dogs/pets as this is at least the second time he’s made major rulings against them - the first time being Beethoven, the Great Dane. There should be some sort of in-between description for pets. I find it hard to believe that a living, breathing, loving creature that feels happiness and pain is relegated to the status of lawnmower or mailbox. We need another definition/option.
