Women’s college basketball will begin next season in the city where it will end – Tampa.
The St. Pete Times Forum, home of the 2008 Women’s Final Four, will host a doubleheader tournament on Nov. 15, featuring the University of South Florida. The Bulls will take on Duke in the first game of the ESPNU Women’s Basketball Invitational at 7 p.m. Tennessee and Oklahoma will face each other in the second game at 9 p.m. The event will be televised live on ESPNU.
‘’We thought it would be a unique concept to be able to put a doubleheader on the same floor the eventual champion will be crowned,’’ said Rob Higgins, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. “I think there are some great story lines. Obviously you’ve got Tennessee and Oklahoma. That’s going to be a great matchup. And then you’ve got a chance with Duke and South Florida. It speaks volumes to everything [USF] Coach Fernandez has accomplished, to be able to participate on a national stage like that.
‘’It’s an opportunity for us to provide a legacy for the tournament as well. It’s something that hasn’t been done before and for it to kickoff in our community first, is another thing that we can lead with the tournament and continue to raise the bar.’’
Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster in July.
