CLEARWATER - Kathleen Atkins, who maintained she was kidnapped and driven to Polk County in the bed of her pickup, apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound April 25, Clearwater investigators said this week.
There was some question as to whether Atkins’ death was accidental.
The 44-year-old Clearwater woman was known to sleep with a handgun in her bed, authorities have said.
On March 7, Atkins turned up in Polk County one day after she was reported missing from her home on North Jupiter Avenue, about 50 miles away.
Atkins told investigators she had been abducted by a man wearing a ski mask and that he had wrapped her in a quilt, thrown her into the back of her 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup, then closed a lid that covers the bed before driving off.
The kidnapping report remains under investigation, said Sgt. Greg Stewart, of the Clearwater Police Department.
A staff report
Lynda,
Did you not read the article? She shot her self and she is dead. There will be no helping this poor soul. Don’t be so quick to judge. You never know what people are going through.
After my neighbors girlfriend died of cancer we all thought he was doing fine. He made no attempts to talk or ask for help. Six months after her death he shot himself so he could “be with her”. Pain is somtimes a hard thing for people to deal with.
Seems like these nut jobs are all over, we don’t like every acpect of our lives but we gotta deal with it. Maybe a little sentencing for at least six months in a state metal intitution will do her good. And filing some criminal charges for the false call and wasted manpower, please don’t give this one a little slap on the wrist and say bye-bye while she’s trasnorted to Floirda State Hospital for pych elvaluation....
May she rest in peace.
God rest her soul
