A Winter Haven man died this morning in an accident with a Polk County Sheriff’s unmarked patrol car.
A 1996 Ford Explorer was traveling westbound on Eloise Loop Road when the driver lost control after a curve and flipped once, ending up on its passenger side facing westbound traffic of the north side of the roadway, a sheriff’s office news release said.
Deputy Sheriff Isaac Jackson, also traveling westbound and rounding the curve, saw the lights from the Explorer. The deputy attempted to respond and his vehicle left the roadway and collided with the Explorer in the front passenger area, the news release said.
Arturo Cordero, 27, of Winter Haven, died at the scene. His brother, Onesimo Cordero-Casarrabias, 21, was not injured.
Deputies do not know who was driving the Explorer.
PCSO traffic homicide detectives are conducting an investigation. Jackson has been with the agency for nine months.
