TAMPA – Two games have been added to the existing four-game football series between the University of South Florida and the University of Miami, with the teams now scheduled to play in five consecutive seasons starting in 2009.
The 2009 game will remain Sept. 26 in Tampa, while the remaining four contests will be played on Thanksgiving weekend. Those contests are expected to be televised by ESPN, since the network approached Miami about developing an annual nationally televised UM series in November.
Last year The Tampa Tribune reported that ESPN initially suggested to Miami AD Paul Dee about televising an annual Miami series in its regular season finale and Dee suggested USF as the opponent to network officials. USF and UM then discussed the proposal with Big East and Atlantic Coast Conference officials.
No dates for the 2010-13 contests have been set and they could be played conceivably on any days between Thursday and Sunday.
USF will host the 2009, 2011 and 2013 games, while Miami will host the 2010 and 2012 games.
USF lost at Miami 27-7 in 2005 in the first game of the series.
