TAMPA - University of South Florida starting quarterback Matt Grothe faces a second-degree misdemeanor charge for serving alcohol to an underage person after receiving a citation last week at a local sports bar, his attorney said.
‘’It is not an arrest, it’s a notice to appear,’’ said Tony Dodds, Grothe’s attorney. ‘’He did not go through booking procedures. He received an order to appear in court. It’s not a whole lot different than a traffic ticket.’’
The incident involving Grothe, 20, occurred April 19 at Zimbo’s Bull Ring Sports Bar and Grill, 1241 E. Fowler, Dodds said. The Bull Ring is geared toward USF fans and frequently hosts official USF coaches’ radio shows.
Grothe is no longer employed at the restaurant, Dodds said.
USF coach Jim Leavitt did not return telephone calls seeking comment.
‘’Matt regrets being in this position,’’ Dodds said. ‘’We’re going to try to rectify this as quickly as possible and he doesn’t want this to interfere with the University of South Florida football team.’’
