TAMPA - An Air Force hurricane hunter did not find a tropical depression off the Carolina coast this afternoon, but forecasters say an area of disturbed weather still has the potential to become a cyclone.
In a special National Hurricane Center statement issued this afternoon, forecasters said residents in North Carolina, Virginia, and the Delmarva peninsula should pay close attention to the disturbance.
“Tropical storm warnings could be required with little notice,” the hurricane center said.
A hurricane hunter will continue to investigate the system.
Residents in the Tampa Bay area are not at risk.
The disturbance is centered about 35 miles southwest Cape Lookout, North Carolina, with a small area of gale force winds on its east side. It did not have a closed circulation, which is indicative of stronger storms, forecasters said.
The stormy weather is tracking northward at 20 to 25 mph.
Forecasters predict gusty winds and heavy rain as bands of rain make landfall.
If the cluster of squalls intensifies to become a tropical storm it will be named Beryl. A list of all 2006 names can be found in the Storm Team 8 Ready Guide.
Parts of the Atlantic seaboard are already drenched, after being soaked by a series of storms Sunday and Monday. Flooding has been reported in several states.
