TAMPA - An Air Force hurricane hunter did not find a tropical depression off the Carolina coast this afternoon, but forecasters say an area of disturbed weather still has the potential to become a cyclone.
In a special National Hurricane Center statement issued this afternoon, forecasters said residents in North Carolina, Virginia, and the Delmarva peninsula should pay close attention to the disturbance.
“Tropical storm warnings could be required with little notice,” the hurricane center said.
A hurricane hunter will continue to investigate the system.
Residents in the Tampa Bay area are not at risk.
The disturbance is centered about 35 miles southwest Cape Lookout, North Carolina, with a small area of gale force winds on its east side. It did not have a closed circulation, which is indicative of stronger storms, forecasters said.
The stormy weather is tracking northward at 20 to 25 mph.
Forecasters predict gusty winds and heavy rain as bands of rain make landfall.
If the cluster of squalls intensifies to become a tropical storm it will be named Beryl. A list of all 2006 names can be found in the Storm Team 8 Ready Guide.
Parts of the Atlantic seaboard are already drenched, after being soaked by a series of storms Sunday and Monday. Flooding has been reported in several states.

Steven, actually I started the political puns, and I ain’t no blankety-blank @$!%# LIBERAL! lol.
Imagine how boring weather would be without someone to blame. Now we all know things like the ice age, and the recent find that the arctic was once tropical, happened Looooong before man, or George Bush for that matter, came along. But, we don’t want facts to interfere with liberal logic.
This weather story has NOTHING to do with President Bush. Why do liberals have to bring politics into everything?
Regarding the Muttonhead comment by the muttonhead man...You are so right you cannot blame the weather on Bush. But hes so oil money greedy, he does not examine the fact the greenhouse gases form by pollution to the Ozone. Mr Bush adamantly denies these scientific proven facts provided to us by hi Level Scientist. He does nothing to help relieve this pollution, Therefore he is a large contributor because he has the power to control this pollution that factories an cars do produce
So Mister Muttonhead needs to get his chip off of his shoulder and not defend a contributor to the larger picture.
Thank You

Chris, of course Bush has nothing to do with hurricanes. You and I know that, but invariably some Al Gore groupie comes along and lays the blame squarely at his feet, so I preempt them.
The earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years. Hurricanes and other weather events run in cycles. I know that because I was an Air Force weather man at Homestead, below Miami during one of the cycles of heavy tropical activity.
The muttonheads who bow at the throne of Gore don’t learn enough to realize these facts, so they conveniently blast Bush with the blame.
Ok my fellow bloggers, wait, wait, wait. I was IN Charlie. I was IN Francis, and I was IN Jeanne, all on 04. Being in the public safety arena, all’s I can safely say was....New Orleans was not prepared for katrina. Plain..simple. But yet they got away with blaming FEMA and the administration. BUt coming from a blue state what would one expect? From New Orleans mayor up the ladder to the Governor FAILED to heed warnings given directly to them for the NHC in miami. You give people handouts, they will always expect it. Except for the late great Ronald Reagan, “W” is the best prez have had in the past thirty years.
This is nuts. This storm out in the Atlantic or a hurricane has nothing to do with George Bush.Come on,get a life!
Ariel, in my real life, I’m a member of the Executive Committee of the Republican Party for Hillsborough County.
So......I spend a good deal of my time, successfully I might add, getting Republicans elected, so they too can be blamed for everything from Acne to Zionism (well, I suppose we are Israel’s friend)
Mr. MacQueen, having seen your previous comments on other articles, you lack success in “tongue and cheek” situations. Therefore, we highly doubt that your intention was nothing less than being the first to jump on the band-wagon and blame Bush. Given the Katrina events and the current war, it would be nice if you could refrain from being insensitive.
I get along with everyone. Hurricanes, Tropical weather is part of Florida so if you live here you should be use to it. As far as Bush is concerned....uhmmm...maybe this storm was created when he blew out his hot air!
Thanks to those who understand “tongue in cheek.”
Perhaps Iris is also clever with it. “Can’t we all just get along? BUSH SUCKS.” Sounds like an attempt at extending a hand of friendship to me!
We all know Bush can’t control the weather. It’s SUV’s! Everybody knows THAT!
Can’t we all just get along. BUSH SUCKS!
OK, Ms. Spivey,
Sarcasm: “Remarks that mean the opposite of what they seem to say and are intended to mock.”
In the past 2 years or so President Bush has been blamed for everything imaginable, up to and including Katrina, by a lot of people. So take your definitions and mine and put them together. I think you will see that Mr. MacQueen was just trying to have a little light-hearted fun.
In any event, after having lived in your area for 15 years (and I’d pack my bags and go back tomorrow, if I could) I sincerely hope you suffer no hurricane related problems this year.
SHENANIGANS:
1) A DEVIOUS TRICK
2) PLAYFULL ACTIVITIES
3) MISCHIEF
4) SHIFTY OR QUESTIONABLE BEHAVIOR
WHAT AM I MISSING, BECAUSE I COULD USE A GOOD CHUCKED.
Too bad, Ms. Krug, you didn’t understand Mr. MacQueen’s literary ironic sarcasm. I chuckled myself.
IF YOU THINK PRESIDENT BUSH IS RELATED TO MOTHER NATURE & MOTHER NATURE IS FULL OF SHENANIGANS, MR MACQUEEN YOU GOT SOMETHING COMING.
PUT ALL THAT ASIDE AND LETS BE MORE THOUGHTFUL OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO ENDURE THE BAD WEATHER.
Exactly Jane Krug of Ohio, but that didn’t stop anyone from blasting Bush for Katrina, now did it?
Mr B Lewis has lived in Tampa for 55 years and been through Noreasters, midwest tornados, etc. You have certainly been lucky to never be through a hurricane in all those years but have been less lucky to get in all those other natural disasters. Thanks for letting us know that hurricanes don’t even rank compared to the other things. I feel so much more at ease now.
Hey, Michael macQueen,
If you honestly believe that George Bush controls the weather, shouldn’t we all be on our knees worshiping him?
You are an idiot!
Well folks, given the history of the last few yrs and the nature of storms..
it is only wise to give some kind of warning. If they did not then we would be back to the blame game if something drastic happens and lawsuits blah blah blah. I would much rather hear about the potential than the potential aftermath. give me a break.
Just when I had to fill up my gas tank again, (have to every 2 days)the price of gas jumped 15 cents in one day. Seems every time there is mention of a tropical system, gas jumps up..
Humor us—how is this a Bush shenanigan? As for the other person, just because no tornadoes or other natural forces have severely damaged your home yet doesn’t mean there’s not a minute likelihood it won’t ever happen. Reference to an event in Galveston, Texas in 1900. Warnings are just that--it’s up to everyone to just be aware. Boy if we didn’t get some kind of warning, then we would definitely hear complaints about that later on.
Here we go again people always complaining that nothing happen, I wonder what it will happen the day that something really hit us, because its just a matter of time PEOPLE YOU WILL BE SORRY!!!!!!!
Whats the big deal? The storm that hit DC this week was not a tropical storm. Did more damage anyway. NOAA said last week that the Atlantic was 1-2 degrees cooler then last year and that the chance of a storm like this gaining force is unlikely. It’s just alot of rain and some wind. I have lived if Florida 55 years and never had a window broken by a hurricane. Just a few branchs broken. Ever been through a Nor’easter at the Cape, tornado in the midwest, sandstorm in New Mexico? Been there done that and they bother me. NO warning.
More George Bush shenanigans, no doubt.

Mr. Koller, what did your entry regarding pollution have to do with the tropical weather?
