Less than a week after the Largo city manager announced he will have a sex change, city leaders are preparing to review his employment contract.

Commissioners will hold a special meeting tomorrow night to “discuss and take action, if necessary,” according to a city memo. Other items that had been on the agenda have been shelved until next month.

Steve Stanton’s contract, which was first signed in 2003, states it may be terminated “with or without cause” at any time by either Stanton or the city.
Stanton, 47, stunned the city and made national news when he publicly announced he will become Susan over the next two years. “This is going to be awkward for people to adjust to,” Stanton said last Wednesday.
In an e-mail to city employees, Stanton said he had been seeing a gender therapist for three years. He said he has undergone extensive psychological testing, hormone therapy, and painful electrolysis for two years.

The memo announcing a special Tuesday night meeting calls for extra police and fire department personnel to attend, as “the crowd is anticipated to be large.”
Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m., at 201 Highland Avenue in Largo.
