GIBSONTON - An Apollo Beach man is accused of holding a woman and six children at knifepoint before killing a man he thought was dating his girlfriend.
Michael Edward Smith, 29, first arrived at the Gibsonton home of James Peak at 11311 Cujoe Road about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said. Peak was not at home, but his sister-in-law was, babysitting six young children. Smith, armed with a knife, refused to let them leave until Peak arrived, the sheriff’s office said.
When Peak arrived at home with his brother, Smith stabbed Peak, the sheriff’s office said. Peak ran, but Smith followed him, stabbing him again, the sheriff’s office said.
Peak died of his injuries. Deputies found Smith hiding on the property of a Moose lodge about a quarter-mile away.
Smith was held without bail at Orient Road Jail today, charged with felony first-degree murder and felony false imprisonment.
