CLEARWATER - It’s official, in legal world anyway.
Steven Stanton, the former Largo city manager who was fired after he revealed plans for a sex change, had his name legally changed to Susan Stanton this morning.
His middle name, Bruce, was also replaced by a new one – Ashley.
Stanton, 48, had filed a petition in court seeking the name change in April, and at a brief, routine hearing Thursday, Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Cynthia J. Newton okayed Stanton’s request.
Stanton attended the hearing in a dark pants suit, white blouse, high heels, earrings, and stockings. He was accompanied by Shelbi Day, an attorney with the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
“I didn’t anticipate this being the emotional experience it was,” Stanton told reporters after the hearing. “It’s a critical step.”
Stanton’s sex change operation – technically called a gender reassignment – is expected to take place in ten or eleven months, he said. As part of the process, Stanton has had to go through several steps – including dressing as a woman, having friends and family address him as Susan and now, the legal name change.
