TAMPA - Police are investigating who fired several shots at officers early this morning while they boxed in a stolen van in the Palmetto Beach area.
According to a preliminary police report, officers Elvin Cruz and C.M. McCoy, who are part of the Street Anti-Crime Squad, were patrolling in Palmetto Beach about 12:35 a.m. when they noticed two juveniles near South 20th Street and East Maple Avenue in a van. As the officers attempted to make contact with the youths, the youths began to drive away.
The officers boxed in the 2003 Ford van and determined it was stolen, police said. They arrested one of the youths inside the van and another after a brief chase.
During the chase, someone fired multiple times at the police. Officers found six bullet holes lodged in a residence at 2020 E. Maple Ave., police said.
No one was injured during the shooting.
Officer Kristin Molina, a police spokeswoman, said police were not identifying the juveniles who were arrested at this point because of the ongoing investigation into the shooting. Police have not determined whether the two incidents are connected.
