Sen. Nelson’s Son To Be Sentenced July 31

From The Associated Press

ORLANDO - Senator Bill Nelson is voicing his respect for the U.S. justice system, although he’s disappointed about his son’s conviction on charges of battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.

The charges against Charles Nelson stem from a confrontation that occurred after his father’s re-election party in November.

Charles Nelson faces up to six years in prison when he is sentenced July 31.

A judge Wednesday threw out a public intoxication charge against Charles William Nelson, saying no evidence was introduced during his trial to support it.

Police say Charles Nelson was trying to carry a woman who had passed out on a sidewalk and pushed an officer after he was ordered to put her down.

Nelson’s lawyers say he didn’t realize the person he pushed was a police officer.
