WASHINGTON - The U.S. government is putting millions of lives at risk by woefully under funding hurricane forecasting research, a key federal scientific panel said Friday.
The National Science Board said the nation needs to more than double its annual investment in hurricane research – from $216 million to $516 million – in a new report calling for the creation of a National Hurricane Research Initiative.
In recent years, federal tropical storm forecasters have improved their ability to tell the public where a storm will make landfall, but they still have difficultly saying how strong a storm will be when it hits.
Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., was introducing legislation Friday calling for funding for the proposed center.

What a load of Hog wash! Everyone has their hands in our pockets and acts like a few hundred million is no big deal. They have an important job.....but somethings are just over the top! And who do they turn to for help? The greatest give-away artists of all time, the supposed fiscal responsible republicans, which have created the greatest debt this country has ever seen, with absoulutley nothing to show for it except richer friends.
