PALM HARBOR - Two Palm Harbor teenagers were arrested today on charges they spray-painted racial slurs and other graffiti on nine portable classrooms at Palm Harbor University early Friday.
Colin A. Morrison, 19, of 2042 Monica Court, and David V. Fishman, 18, of 101 Winding Willow Drive, were each charged with one count of criminal mischief. Bail for each teenager was set at $10,000.
Because of the offensive nature of the graffiti, investigators consider the vandalism to constitute a hate crime, said Pinellas Sheriff’s Sgt. Jim Bordner. It targeted African Americans and Jews, he said.
Surveillance cameras at the school at 1400 Omaha St. recorded both teens as they spray-painted, Bordner said. Students were not allowed to enter the affected area when school opened until the graffiti was painted over, Bordner said.
Deputies say that this morning they received a tip which directed their investigation toward Morrison and Fishman. Both teens admitted their involvement when they were arrested at their homes today at around noon.
