Hillsborough students will have a secular calendar in 2007-08 but retain Florida State Fair Day and a day off for the Strawberry Festival, depending on what area of the county they live.
To end dispute over which religious holidays to close school, the board decided on a calendar with Christmas the only religious day off. To complete the first semester before the winter holiday, the district will cut two of the four extra days it added to its school year several years ago.
Here’s the calendar the school board approved tonight:
Monday, Aug. 20 - First day of school
Monday, Sept. 3 – Labor Day holiday
Friday, Oct. 19 – Teacher Study Day
Wednesday, Nov. 21-Friday, Nov. 23 - Thanksgiving
Monday, Dec 24-Monday, Jan. 7 – Winter holidays
Monday, Jan. 21 – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
Monday, Feb. 8 – Fair Day (all but eastern Hillsborough)
Monday, Feb. 18 – President’s Day holiday
Monday, March 3 – Strawberry Festival (eastern Hillsborough)
Monday, April 7-Friday, April 11 – Spring break
Friday, May 2 – Student, teacher holiday
Monday, May 26 – Memorial Day holiday
Wednesday, June 4 – Last day of school
