TOWN ‘N COUNTRY - A 25-year-old man died Thursday morning after being struck by a van carrying people who might be undocumented workers, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Jason A. Cabrera, of 1012 E. Chilkoot Ave., was crossing Waters Avenue just west of Hanley Road about 6:06 a.m. when he stepped into the path of the eastbound 1995 Ford van, the sheriff’s office said. He died of his injuries at the scene.
Deputies are still investigating the crash. They have not determined whether to file charges against the van’s driver, Ferman Ruiz-Tarejo, 23, of 2021 N. 11th St., Tampa, officials said.
The van was carrying five passengers, all of whom share an apartment at 6210 Sheldon Road, the sheriff’s office said. Officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement responded to the crash.
