TAMPA - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is investigating a report of fuel in the ground near a former gas station on Davis Islands.
A subcontractor for Verizon digging holes for fiber-optic cable called Tampa Fire Rescue about 9:20 a.m. after seeing water and what appeared to be gasoline leaching into the soil from the three-foot-deep hole, fire officials said.
The hole was dug south of Island Auto Service, a former gas station at East Davis Boulevard and Chesapeake Avenue. A worker there told firefighters the station’s fuel tanks had been removed from the ground in 1994.
A state DEP representative on site told firefighters the fuel had been present in the soil for years and was not a hazard to residents. The state representative was investigating other possible causes, in addition to the old fuel storage, fire officials said.
