Number Of Missing Foster Children On The Rise

The Department of Children and Families can’t find 652 foster children in its care. The majority are considered runaways or parental abductions.

The problem first came to light in 2002 when 5-year-old Rilya Wilson had been missing for 15 months before her disappearance was discovered.

The department is not following the law when it comes to providing guardians for many foster children.

Losing a child is a parents’ worst nightmare, but it seems losing foster children is routine for DCF. The department website lists 652 missing foster kids - up from just over 500 when Rilya Wilson was discovered missing four years ago. Still, the department says it has one of the best records in the country.

The DCF list still includes Rilya Wilson, who would be 10 in September.

You know what is the saddest part of this whole story. That 652 foster children that are lost is a very small percentage of the children in the foster care system. The fact that we have so many children unwanted or uncared for by their parents speaks multitudes about our society’s morality (the one our administration thinks the whole world should emulate..yeah right!). Personally I think if a parent cannot care for one child, make sure BY ANY MEANS that they cannot have other children. This will cut down on the amount of children born that ultimtely end up in foster care. This limiting of children coupled with additional personnel, additional resources and higher accountablity would go a long way to improve a failing system.

If private citizens showed the same same care and concern for their children that the state of Florida does then they would be thrown in jail, and rightly so. The crumbs that our esteemed Governor and legislature toss the most needful of our population, is immoral bordering on criminal. There are no wealthy, powerful lobbyists on to woo, bribe or buy senators on their behalf. Don’t want to spend the money on foster care? Don’t worry, we’ll have another crack at it, when we pay to incarcerate, or worse bury them later on. Not to mention the foster children THEY create. Children don’t ask to be born and unfortunately they don’t get to pick their parents. We as a society are no greater than our weakest, most helpless citizens. Our silence on this is deafening. We have to start holding these sorry politicians accountable.

If a parent were to “lose a child” he or she would be arrested for child neglect or worse. These children are supposed to be protected, not warehoused and lost. There needs to be serious changes in the child protection system NOW. Where is the accountability. Who is answerable. This is unacceptable and heads should roll starting at the top.

The saddest part is that the comment from DCF is that they rank better than the national average. I hope that helps them sleep better at night. It’s certainly not a reassuring thought to me. I guess this is the standard to which they try to achieve, to lose fewer kids than other states. It’s time that someone was held accountable for this organizations irresponsible actions and unwillingness to improve. These poor children depended on this organization for safety and security and instead they are ...who knows where?
