TAMPA - Sheriff’s deputies say a mother who was arrested Tuesday knew her son was growing marijuana in her back yard.
Esther Victoria Soto, 49, told deputies that she had no problem with her son, a minor, growing the plant and said “it was a nice-looking plant,” according to an arrest affidavit.
Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies said they confiscated nearly 73 grams of marijuana from Soto’s house at 2707 E. 98th Ave.
Soto was arrested Tuesday and her son was arrested Aug. 20, the night deputies found the plant. Deputies said they waited to arrest Soto until they had confirmation from the state attorney’s office that her son would be charged.
Soto is charged with felony possession of marijuana over 20 grams and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She was released Tuesday from Orient Road Jail after posting $2,500 bail.

What a cool but not so bright mom.
$2500....bail what ludicrous amount of money. It’s frickin pot. La de frickin da. Everyone think hard, I mean real hard, how many people do you know that pot has directly killed. Now think of all, JUST AS MIND-ALTERING OF A DRUG, ALCOHOL HAS KILLED, and it’s legal, so throw that whole legal/ it’s the law crap out the window, let’s talk numbers of related injuries and deaths. Can I grow mind-altering mushrooms in my backyard, legally? Pot is just another part of nature. Waste of resources busting a woman growing pot, instead think of how you help your socially accepted legally alcoholic brother/ sister/ mother/ father/ friend/ they need your help. My NON-POT smoking thoughts.
Gayle, I think the reason we’re pointing you out is because you posted:- “Last time I checked statistice “Pot heads†tend to turn into “crack heads†- pot is an entrance drug."-
This is what we’re disagreeing with. You say that your point was only that pot is illegal, but that is far from what you stated. Don’t take offense when we disagree with you (especially when it’s painfully obvious you’ve never smoked pot and don’t know what you’re talking about).
Robert, not sure whom you feel has been mean or rude. I have been as pointed and frank as everyone else on this FORUM. My comments are just as warranted as anyone elses. My point continues to be that no matter how angry some are that police are spending time arresting people like the mother/son in this article it is because it’s their job. Make pot legal - I don’t really care - but until then it’s still a crime. Period.
Prohibition was in the 20’s, but your point is a good one. It failed.
I’ve read two points from the “pot stoppers” here - pot is an entrance drug, and it’s against the law. Both are weak. While nearly all hard drug users started with pot, most pot smokers don’t move on to hard drugs. And yes, it’s against the law. So are many (surprising) things. We have many outdated laws on the books.
Bottom line for me - who gets hurt or “wronged”? To me, it’s obvious. Legalize or at least decriminalize (holy rollers be damned!).
There are more people in the upper echilon of society that smoke pot than any of you people that put others down will ever imagine. People that own homes and business’ that you all frequent and people that you voted for.
It is the moral right and nothing else that makes things the way they are and it wont stop because they will keep forcing their ways on other people. It would probably amaze you how much pot does not make it to the evidence room. Take note that those non pot smokers are the ones being mean and rude on this forum. Maybe you should get a life and stay out of others
This kid is charged with a felony for doing something even his mother thinks is ok. The gang members busted recently kill people, rob, and steal. Now WHY IS THIS KID FACING A FELONY CHARGE WILE THE GANG MEMBERS WHO HAVE MASSIVE RAP SHEETS ARE LET GO ON MINOR CHARGES. Anyone who sais that weed is a entrance drug is just saying what they have been told or would like to think to justify obviously unjust laws.
Hurray Kim.
I say decriminalise and offer help not jailtime that makes cons out of kids.
Some of the most successful, most wealthy people(for example the President & 1st lady)have or still smoke pot. The fact is pot doesn’t lead to cancer or liver disease. No one has ever died from a weed overdose. Alcohol and tabacco are big business and so is treating(not curing) the illnesses they cause. It should be legal, but many people, especially ones in law enforcement would lose their jobs if that were to happen… And nobody wants that.
i wish she was my mom when i was growing up.
Jane, use it as you want to. It is what it is. If you think it will help outlaw chocolate - that isn’t my point. Point is...it’s still considered to be against the law.
Yes, why doesn’t TPD spend more time on important things like spending 2 years and $6,400 on investigating lap dancers and cocktails?
I agree with Kim, even though I haven’t smoked in 20 years, I know several people who smoke daily and they have never tried meth or robbed someone to support their habit. Awhile back there was a guy who got life for growing pot, meanwhile we got perverts walking around raping and killing innocent kids. And people like Rhonda Storms that keep their blinders on to gang activity and crimes with real victims! We all have a computer use it to send some e-mail to Charlie Crist or Jim Davis...they will address the real issues if they want to get elected. (myflorida.com)
I like what Joe Davis Has to say and agree wholeheartedly. Take it up with your Congressional Representative. These days ... Too much talk - not enough action.
Barbara Rosson, excellent comment. Whether we agree with it or not growing and using pot is against the law. The police are there to enforce all laws. They cannot pick and choose which ones they will enforce.
If people think that pot should be legal, which by the way, I do than they should stop complaining about the police doing their job and start writing letters to their representitives to get the law changed.
I bet that if all the money of pot
being sold would go to the government
it would be legal, just like cigarretes
and liqour.
Gayle, alcohol and cigarettes are USUALLY the first “drugs” people use.
Why not make them illegal, if we follow the lame excuse you just used.
Seems like the general consensus here is to legalize marijuana. If that is the way most people feel, why hasn’t it been done.
Probably because our gutless politicians are afriad of offending the religious right who also seem to have a big contingent of followers in the law enforcement community.
It’s also good business for the justice system/business to keep churning out new criminals. The justice system in this country for the most part is just a good clean service related industry run by the upper and upper middle class to keep the lower class in positions of servitude.
Perfectly stated Kim White. Exactly.
Ms. White, I don’t really care what you think you know. Reality (without pot eating your brain cells) proves otherwise. I too have friends, family and acquainances who use or used pot and at one time or another they tried something harder. If you care to get passed the end of your nose - there are many articles on this website regarding other types of “crimes” and it seems to me the police are also investigating or making arrests on them as well - so this little pot story isn’t the only thing getting law enforcement attention. No matter how little or big you think the crime may be - it’s still (until otherwise stated) is a CRIME!!
sounds like kim white uses the wacky weed. anyone who uses pot for 30 years needs something better to do. they don’t call it “dope” for nothing
WELL SAID KIM!!!!
FIRST OF ALL POT DOES NOT LEAD TO HARDER DRUGS. I KNOW PEOPLE THAT HAVE SMOKED POT FOR 30 YEARS AND NEVER TRIED CRACK OR METH SO GIVE ME A BREAK. IF GOING AFTER THIS MOTHER AND SON ARE ON THE PRIOITY LIST OF TPD FOR GROWING A POT PLANT SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG. THEY SHOULD BE FOCUSING ON THE HARD CORE CRIMINALS WALKING OUT STREETS KILLING, RAPING AND MOLESTING OUR KIDS. ALCOHOL DOES MORE HARM TO PEOPLE THAN SMOKING A JOINT. LOOK HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE KILLED EACH YEAR BECAUSE OF DRUNK DRIVING. LEGALIZE POT, TAX IT FOR INCOME AND WORRY ABOUT THE OTHER CRIME THAT REALLY MATTERS!
Maybe the cops can give the lap dancers the pot and save cash on the tips for the lap dancers!
Last time I checked statistice “Pot heads” tend to turn into “crack heads” - pot is an entrance drug. Last time I checked it was still against the law to grow, use or sell pot - cops enforce the laws and therefore they were doing their jobs by arresting this mother-son duo. Case closed. But then again the rest of you have a much better plan to rid the streets of crime...let’s get your names on the ballots and applications into the law enforcement agencies. Hop to it!!
