TAMPA - HPV is in the national spotlight, with a new vaccine for girls touted to prevent them from developing cancer as a result of the sexually transmitted disease.

But inside a lab at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, scientists are uncovering other links to HPV that pose health threats for men as well.

Men infected by certain strains of HPV run the risk of developing penile and anal cancers, said Anna Giuliano, a Tampa scientist who has studied the virus for nearly two decades.

Giuliano is leading three studies concerning HPV: a vaccine trial for men, which started two years ago; another that focuses on the rate of infection — which is showing males have high infection rate — and a third that looks at transmission in heterosexual couples.
