Meter Reader Saves Woman From Fire

TAMPA - Setting his own safety aside, a Tampa meter reader heard screams for help and rushed into a burning home Thursday morning to rescue a wheelchair bound senior woman, officials said.

Shortly before noon, Nathaniel Welch, 65, was making his rounds in the northeast Tampa neighborhood when he heard the screams of homeowner Traci Wilson as she was knocking on doors to nearby homes, looking for help, said Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman Jace Kohan.

Seeing smoke coming out of the home at 18112 Birdwater Dr., Welch rushed inside to rescue Wilson’s 72-year-old mother, Betty Menendez, from a wheelchair, Kohan said.

“He’s a quiet guy, and he left the scene before our guys even got there,” Kohan said.

Fire Rescue crews arrived minutes later and quickly extinguished the fire, which was started by grease on the stove, Kohan said. No injuries were reported, and the American Red Cross is assisting the family.

With news of so many murders, rapes and robberies lately, it’s refreshing to hear a positive story.

This man needs to be honored for his bravery.  I know that a “Thank you” should always be enough but when someone goes the extra mile like this man did, to risk his life to save some, that deserves a little more.

Another example of an “Everyday Hero”.  He MUST be recognized. My thanks goes out to him for his act of kindness.
