A 50-year-old man was been taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in critical condition after being slammed into by a hit-and-run driver taking her daughter to school.
Lurvin P. Calderon was driving a blue 1984 Oldsmobile westbound on Hanna Avenue taking her 10-year-old daughter to Seminole Heights Elementary School when she hit the man, Tampa Police say. The impact sent him flying over a chain link fence, into a yard at 806 Hanna. After the accident, Calderon continued down the street to the school.
Police are not releasing his name.
Tampa police charged Calderon, 26, with three felony charges: leaving the scene of a crash with injury, DUI with serious bodily injury and possession of a controlled substance.
Police said she had Xanax without a prescription, jail records show. Calderon also was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. She is being held at Orient Road Jail this afternoon on $6,500 bail.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Deputy Natalie Napolitano was at the intersection of North Nebraska and Hanna Avenue doing a safety survey on the intersection, counting students who walk to school because there is a high volume of cars. Napolitano was looking to see if the students should be bused for safety purposes.
“I heard that all-too-familiar sound when something gets struck,” she said. “I turned around and a witness flagged me over.”
Napolitano arrived at the scene and tried to give medical aid to the victim, police say.
“He was in bad shape,” Napolitano says.
Irazema Viera-Roquemore, another HCSO deputy, was outside the school waiting to give a safety presentation when she was flagged down by another witness who told her the driver in the Oldsmobile hit someone.
Deputy Viera-Roquemore walked the driver back to the scene.
Calderson, a dancer at 2001 Space Odyssey, underwent field sobriety tests after the accident.
How awful that her 10 yr old daughter experienced the event. Not just the impact itself but also her mother’s bad judgment in not stopping and seeking help. Surely, the girl will be having nightmares over this. Very sad for all involved and will certainly be worse if this poor man dies.
Hey,Ralph…Why don’t you drive back to New York!!!!
The horrible driving in this state may be caused by Florida residents however; most residents aren’t originally from Florida. How many people do you know that are originally from Florida? I was born and raised in this wonderful melting pot of garbage and I know just a handful, mostly my family that has been here since the beginning of time (yes, the Indians). I’m so sick and tired of Yankees and Foreigners complaining about how people from Florida drive. It’s not the people from Florida my friends. Listen to the accent, which will give you the answer you are seeking.
TELL HER TO HIRE THE SAME LAWYER AS THAT SCHOOL TEACHER.
AND SHE WILL BEAT THE CHARGES NO PROBLEM.
I agree with the lady that asks - what does her profession have to do with the accident?
Well, she must have known she hit the man! But she either wanted to get her child to safety and perhaps call for help from the school, if she did not have a cell phone..or else, she wanted to get rid of some other incriminating evidence first…and perhaps driving under the influence of something.
The problem was leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. The rest is secondary.
I couldn’t resist, though…
Ralph - please remember, slow traffic, keep right. It sounds as if you enjoy being a roadblock. Not only dangerous, but can provoke road rage. I see too many of you types “helping” on our roadways.
You are so right; if it were a doctor that hit this person… do you think they would have written that in the paper??? I think NOT!!! I hope the person that was hit will be okay. That’s what we need to focus on here.
Just keep on driving…..
How can people hit someone with their car and just keep on driving like nothing happened? Are human beings now just like potholes? you have to notice when you hit someone hard enough to toss them over a fence. Its not like she didnt know what had happened. There is a trend today to have a total disregard for all live but your own.
Hope the guy makes it…
Ralph,
I hate to disagree, but this is not a poor driver…it is a selfish, uncaring human being.
How anyone could do such a thing, WITH their child in the car, and simply drive away is beyond me. I do not even want to understand. I hope they put her in jail for a very long time. I hope moreso that the gentleman who was run down survives without major physical problems for the rest of his life.
Sue
I hope she doesn’t give lap dances with the same careless attitude as the way she drives.
Is this another example of the fine driving skills of Florida residents? When will the reckless driving in this state stop? I am trying to do my part by driving well within the speed limit under all conditions, and if I foul up someone’s darting and speeding plans; then all the better.
Is it really necessary to mention her profession or where she’s employed? If she were a doctor would you have included that information in the article? Probably not…
Seems to me, that she has a history of drug problems,. since her arrest record from 2005 is for manufacturing drugs.
Maybe they should be testing her for something other than alcohol? I mean,.. how do you hit someone or even something with your vehicle and just continue about your business???
The driver must have been overtired from dancing all night.
People never cease to amaze me.

I can almost guarntee that she had just gotten off work and probably had been drinking thru out the night to keep herself on that pole. To leave the scene of an accident is totally wrong, but the school teacher killed two people and is still driving; whts the punishment to for this driver.
