A Tribune Staff report
LARG0 - In a 5-2 vote, the Largo City Commission voted to put City Manager Steve Stanton on leave and take steps to fire him.
Stanton last week said he will undergo gender reassignment surgery, but first must live as a woman for a year. Several hundred people turned out for a special meeting called to decide his fate with the city, where he has been employed for 14 years. Only two members of the commission, Mayor Pat Gerard and Commissioner Rodney Woods, voted against taking the steps toward termination.
“I need to reflect after the vote on where do I go from here,” Stanton said afterward.
He has the ability to appeal the decision before a final vote is taken.
