Armando Valdes
Right on time, Armando Valdes, deputy election worker, blesses the opening of the polls by allowing the first 10 voters in line inside Precinct 135 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
He’s opened a lot of doors in his day. Valdes, 82, has been a pollworker for 18 years. Some might extol the virtues of the electoral process. Valdes is a pragmatist. He works for the 14-hour gig every election for the moolah: “For $200 a day,” he exclaims.
The son of a Cuban-born father, Valdes knows how to stay alert every one of those 14 hours: “I bring my own coffee – Cuban coffee.”
