TAMPA - Tampa Police say a drunk driver slammed his Hummer into a patrol car this morning with such force it totaled the cruiser and sent the officer to the hospital.
Investigators said the Hummer came off the northbound I-275 ramp at Dale Mabry Highway and slammed into the patrol car about 3 a.m.
The officer was waiting to turn onto northbound I-275.
Paramedics transported Sgt. Christopher Ugles to St. Joseph’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was released and is expected to make a full recovery.
Police charged Stacy Smith, 39, with DUI with property damage or personal injury, a misdemeanor, according to jail records. His blood alcohol content was found to be .166 and .162. Anyone with a BAC of .08 or above is considered intoxicated under Florida law.
Smith, a self-employed medical implants salesman from Orange Park, is being held at the Orient Road Jail on $500 bond, according to jail records.
