JACKSONVILLE - The New Year’s Day Gator Bowl in Jacksonville probably won’t be a sell out, but West Virginia fans will definitely be in full force.
Gator Bowl president Rick Catlett says he thinks the game will be a home game for West Virginia because it seems about a third of the stadiums tickets will be bought by Mountaineer fans.
Catlett says about 69,000 tickets have been distributed so far for the game between W-V-U and Georgia Tech at the 73,000-seat Alltel Stadium.
Each school received 12,750 tickets to sell. Gator Bowl officials aren’t sure how many Georgia Tech has sold, but Catlett says West Virginia officials have requested an additional 3,000.
Despite an oh-and-five record in the Gator Bowl, WVU has always been one of the bowl’s best friends from a ticket standpoint.
The Gator Bowl attendance record of 82,911 was set when WVU played Clemson in 1989.
Four other WVU appearances in the Gator Bowl have drawn at least 70,000.
