Fuel Blaze Shuts Down Stretch Of Orient Road

TAMPA - A fire with flames reported as high as 150 feet shut down part of Orient Road on Tuesday night, leading authorities to move inmates who were nearby.

Fire officials were investigating what caused a truck and several cylinders holding liquid propane to catch fire shortly after 8:00 p.m. The fire broke out at Florida Lift Gas, 7105-A 6th Ave., a liquid propane supplier near Orient Road.

A truck that can hold as much as 10,000 gallons of liquid propane and a cylinder that can hold as much 30,000 gallons of liquid propane were both on fire when Tampa and Hillsborough County crews arrived.

Several 33-pound gas cylinders exploded, causing debris to land 100 feet away, said Capt. Bill Wade, Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman.

A Florida Lift Gas employee was working when the fire broke out. He suffered minor burns and was taken to a local hospital. Wade said the man will be the key to determining how the fire started.

The first fire crew that arrived reported seeing flames shoot more than 100 to 150 feet high. Firefighters were worried the truck and large cylinder would explode, but they were able to get the fire under control in less than an hour.

“If the truck exploded, we would have had a huge fireball,” Wade said. “We would have had damage for a half-mile or a mile around the site. This was a bad situation.”

No firefighter injuries were reported, he said.

The fire caused Tampa police to shut down Orient Road between Adamo Drive and Broadway Avenue, and about 165 inmates inside the Work Release Center at 1801 Orient Road had to be moved to the Orient Road Jail, 1201 Orient Road.

The fire also caused authorities to set up a temporary holding area at Falkenburg Road Jail for anyone arrested Tuesday evening, said Hillsborough sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter.

I agree! I was in my bedroom when I heard the noise, and I requested a courtesy drive by from the sherrif’s office.  When I called, they told me what had happened.  Imagine having to live with this sort of thing everyday! I hope no one was injured.

I was sitting in my room, doing my homework with the window open on this wonderfully cool night. I was talking on the phone and I heard these loud booms that sounded like far-off bombs or something of the like. Just then I began to hear many many emergency vehicle sirens going off. We didn’t know what was happening, and we wanted to make sure we weren’t in danger, so we got in our SUV and drove towards where we thought the sirens were coming from. We ended up on Highway 60, just west of the Orient Road intersection. We could see the fire balls rolling up from the explosions that kept happening. It was very eery, especially to think that this is how people in war-torn countries normally live life, with major explosions happening constantly.
