ST. PETERSBURG - Police arrested five people today at the St. Pete Pride Street Festival, four of them protesters who carried signs with anti-homosexual slogans at the annual gay pride event, police said.
Joshua Pettigrew, 21, Douglas C. Pitts, 50, Willie Lee Holt, 31, and Francis W. Primavera, 25, who are all from Georgia, have been charged with violating city ordinances. Police said they were carrying large signs above their heads.
A fifth person was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct. Shelah Walker, 56, is accused of throwing an alcoholic beverage at some protesters, splashing some bystanders and a police officer.
Between 30,000 and 40,000 people attended the morning parade and afternoon festival.
