TAMPA - An inmate who escaped from Manatee County was caught at a Tampa gas station Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that James David Greig was at a Chevron station on Nebraska Avenue, Tampa police spokesman Larry McKinnon said. Greig, 39, escaped Sunday from a work farm behind Manatee County Central Jail.
Tampa officers located Greig, who was on the phone with someone in Manatee County, McKinnon said.
Greig gave his name as Larry Smith, an arrest affidavit states. He told police his birthday was May 14, 1967, two days before his actual birthday.
Greig was arrested in May and June on burglary and violation of probation charges. He now faces charges of false name to a law enforcement officer, felony escape from confinement and felony armed burglary.
He will be held at Orient Road Jail without bail until he is returned to Manatee County, McKinnon said.

Who was it that said criminals are not stupid? This guy should be on Jay Leno’s list of stupid criminals.
He was in jail, probably for a short time and now he faces charges which are much more serious than his original charges.
Now he will be spending some real time in prison, not jail.
