MASARYKTOWN - Investigators are combing through a vehicle that belongs to a Hernando County couple found dead on Sunday. The Kia Sportage was located this morning near the crime scene, according to Donna Black, a spokeswoman for the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to 333 Korbus Road Sunday afternoon by family members who had not heard from Patrick DePalma, 84, and Evelyn DePalma, 79, authorities said.

Both were found dead inside the home.

Their cause of death has not been released. However, “Detectives advised that the couple died a violent death,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Black says an autopsy is still being conducted.

The DePalmas were last seen at church Saturday night, according to Black. “It is unknown if the couple went straight home after church,” Black said.

Next-door neighbor John Gabala said he knew the couple well and regularly checked on them because of their ailing health. A lifelong resident of Masaryktown, Gabala said he was unaware of any previous murders or violent crimes happening in the neighborhood.

“I’m going to sleep tonight with my gun beside me - and my dog inside,” he said Sunday.

Cecil Bradley, who lives down the street, said he has seen several deputies making the rounds in his neighborhood.

“It’s not unusual to see a police car riding down the street,” he said.

None of the five closest residents to the DePalma house said they heard or saw anything suspicious in the days leading up to Sunday.

“This is just quiet, laid-back country,” said Richard Weber, who lives on the same block. “Usually, not a lot happens around here.”

Sunday’s deaths cap off a month plagued with shootings and random violence across the Brooksville area.

An elderly man shot and killed his live-in companion four weeks ago inside his Brookridge home before fatally shooting himself, authorities said.

Last weekend, a Brooksville man was killed inside his house when an armed man walked into his home and fired rounds from his rifle during a struggle with another man inside the house, deputies said.

Sunday’s deaths also come two weeks after an Oct. 15 shooting in South Brooksville that left a man critically wounded.

Anyone with information on Sunday’s deaths or the whereabouts of the missing Kia is asked to call the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office at 352-754-6830 or Crime Stoppers at 797-TIPS.

ok i see were all the confusion about my statement lies… i was not referring to the victims as hillbillies. not at all. i was reffering to the trailer dwelling idiots that line hwy 41. all the hillbilly crack head criminals are making there way into the decent country areas like spring hill- brooksville and where ever this happened. i know i pass this tiny town on my way to my moms in brooksville. crime is getting bad everywere but its still a shock to see something like this happen to people who probably woulnt hurt a fly in a small quiet community. again sorry for the misunderstanding… i was referring to the criminal not the victim.

My prayers go out for the loving Depalma family, friends & church family.  Don’t even acknowledge ignorant comments such as Emma’s.  Your loved ones are celebrating true eternal life in Heaven.

If we could prosecute folks like Emma Lou for being stupid and insensitive, I’m convinced she’d get life.

Whether or not they were hillbillies is beside the point. Although they weren’t, what difference would it make if they were? They were two innocent people that were victims of a terrible crime. No one deserves to be murdered over material things. I am friends with one of their family members here in Tennessee and my heart goes out to her. I hope they catch the S.O.B. that did this.

Prayers are sent to the families who are dealing with this tragedy. It is obvious from certain people’s remarks that they’ve never had to live through such a terrible ordeal. Let’s hope they never do. Those of us who have, send our prayers and love to the DePalma family.

I agree with Terry B. Yesterday when I read this article it said that the victims names were not being released by the Sheriff’s Office until the family had been notified.
However, the writer had done some research, and went on to give the names of the people who were shown to own that property anyway.
No consideration was given to Mr.& Mrs.DePalma’s family who were not yet aware of their murders.
Releasing the first scoop on a news story overrode any respect or empathy
for the victims and their family.

I don’t see how they can release information until EVERYBODY in the family were contacted!! It’s pritty sad that we found out that our loved ones are gone because thier names are released on the TV before we could be called by other family memebers!!!!

This is my aunt and uncle emma lou… and by far they were not hillbillies… they are originally from NJ and were the nicest people you would ever meet!
And thanks to those who said nice things, it appreciated.

It is getting scary everywhere.  As for Emma - don’t think the word “thugged” exists..guess she made that up. She sounds like a real piece of work.  If this poor retired couple had been “hillbillies” the culprits would be meeting their maker on the business end of a 12 ga. shotgun.

Emma, Emma, Emma, you have been taken to task. Now be nice. People died here. Old people at that. There is nothing funny here. Nothing.

First off, Emma Lou is “sick’, if these were your family you would not want to read terrible comments like you made.  Where are you from and have you considered returning????  For “hillbillies” they certainly had a beautiful home!  Huh, they must make money too, imagine that.

I hope they catch these terrible people and give them the justice they deserve!

My sympathy go out to their dear family and friends.  Two wonderful people enjoying God’s earth and the little time they had left and someone decides they should do this to them, who do they think they are??

Terry, look at the article again, now they said “Sunday Night” they couldn’t release any names. Now to day is Monday and this article has been updated, so pay attention and worry about the main story instead of trying to find a flaw in an article.

I fail to understand where you would say that the victims could not be identified until next of kin were notified and then in the same paragraph say “but property records show the house was occupied by…”  Now if they were my relatives and I read this I’d be pretty darned mad right now and that is putting it mildly.  What is the matter with you people?

What an asinine comment to make. “The hillbillies are getting thugged”  Two people who have families and friends grieving for them today shouldn’t have to hear remarks like that.

My prayers go out to the family and friends of these poor people.

You know emma lou if we could find a way to keep you big city folks out of our area we probably wouldn’t have these problems.
