Death In Hospital Under Investigation

BRANDON - Hillsborough County sheriff’s detectives launched an investigation late Thursday after being notified by the county medical examiner’s office that a patient had been found dead in a bathroom at Brandon Regional Hospital, sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Carter identified the patient as Brandi Newman, 28, of Clair-Mel City. The cause of death remains unknown. Investigators are awaiting the results of a toxicology test, which could take six weeks.

A nurse found Newman lying in a bathroom, and the body was taken to the medical examiner’s office morgue before deputies were called, Carter said.

Hospital spokeswoman Debra McKell declined to discuss the death.

“All policies were appropriately followed,” McKell said. “It is standard protocol to contact the [medical examiner’s] office when a death occurs.”

She said an internal investigation was under way.

My 3 week old grandson was admitted to Brandon Hospital May 2006 at the insistance of his pediatrician, his parents wanted to take him to St. Joesheph’s or TGH. He was admitted to the pedatric ICU for vomiting ,high fever and loose stools. They waited in ICU, a private room, for FIVE 5 hours before a nurse entered the room, on the second night the nurse did not speak english!!!! It took 3 days to get him transported to TGH. They told my son it was not alowed and the insurance would not pay for it. All untrue He was transfered, recovered and is doing well. At TGH they could not believe a spinal TAP had not been done, a spinal TAP is protocal for any neonate that presents with a fever. At TGH there was a neonatologist on the floor at all times and the neonatologists checked him 3 times a shift.

No hospital would be better than Brandon hospital.

An investigative report on all the law suits won against Brandon Hospital would be very informative.

I took my oldest son when he was 14 to the hospital for appendicitis, they kept insisting that he had pnuemonia and not appendicitis.  I told them to run the tests anyway.  We stayed there overnight in the ER with doctors still not believing me about my son’s diagnosis.  Finally, they ran the tests and realized I was right all along.  He had emergency surgery right after that after making us wait ALL night…

My daughter just recently went in the hospital and they actually listended to me and I was right. She stayed in the hospital for five days and they treated her very well.  So, one bad experience and one good experience… It can be good or bad… I think all hospitals have different things happen in them.

Brandon Hospital is a horrible hospital. It’s the closest hospital around so I have been there several times and I also had my daughter there. The staff is rude and uncaring. The dr’s are horrible also. The wait is at least 4 hours no matter what time you go. It should be shut down. My daughter was sick recently and we spent over 9 hours in the ER for them to tell us they don’t know what is wrong with her and gave a referral for a specialist. I hate that hospital.

Geez you guys a critical, perhaps this person was on drugs! I mean give me a break maybe if people had insurance hospitals could get their funds and staff more nurses with appropriate pay and maybe people won’t die in the waiting room, btw brandon only has one hospital perhaps that’s a problem with as many people that live in that city. And if you have a problem with the way people are treated stay home and treat yourself smarty pants!

Why is it the bad always get published and the good goes unmentioned?

I agree with all other posts on this site. This Hospital doesn’t care about
anyone at all. There so understaffed,
maybe this is why there are so many
incidents. All they care about is how they can save a dollar. They never
cared about there good employee’s,only
how much work they could get out of
them. And oh never get injured on the job, because they’ll do everything to get out of that to. They treated me
like some kind of caged animal there.
Had me doing things they new was out of my restrictions. I would never
recommend anyone to work there, and not
just because I was injured there. I’m
glad I soaked them for as much as I
could get, because I still have to deal
with the pain from my injury, because
their cheap scat insurance company
wouldn’t pay for the surgery that was
needed. But thats okay all you people
at Brandon,because I;ve found a better
job outside of your place where people
treat you like human beings!

I also want to add that Mr.Fencel is running a dog pound instead of a Hospital. This past year Brandon Hospital had a hard time being passed by the state. He should resign at once.

When I went into to BRH to have my 2nd son 9/18/05, it was a scheduled c-section. The Anesteiologist Tech was trying to give me a spinal, I told her I needed an epideral w/anestesia that I had scoleiosis & a spinal would not work. I was given 9 spinals. Until they thought i was numbed. I still felt the entire surgery & the Tech & the MD both said, “maybe we should have listened to you.” Their staff is rude & they could careless about their patients.

Richard does not know what he is talking about and what this has to do with the war escapes me. Why is it that people from all over the world come to the US for treatment if they can? I have never been to Brandon Hospital but I have always been treated well at other Tampa hospital. Richard needs to go to Canada and see how long it takes to get non-emergency surgery.

I think I’ve heard horror stories about every hospital (University Community, Tampa General, etc...) and also heard good stories about every hospital (Brandond included). Certainly can’t jump to conclusions without having ALL the facts first (this story currently offers very few). Right now, concentrate your energy on thinking of the family who has lost a loved one.

Brandon hospital is the worst. Back in January 2004 my cousin at the age of 36 went in with chest pains they made him wait in the hallway where he died of a heart attack. They said he was to young to be having one. He waited 2 hours.

American health care itself is pitiful and nothing is a surprise anymore. Hospital staffs woefully understaffed and the goverment by doing nothing has made their decision that your health is not important.
By continuing to cut back on help this will save more tax dollars for the BOGUS war.

Nothing surprises me with Brandon Hospital. That is the worst hospital on the west coast, maybe the east to.
