WINTER HAVEN - A Winter Haven man was killed Saturday morning in a crash involving a Polk County Sheriff’s Office patrol car.
Arturo Cordero, 27, 3076 St. Paul Drive, died at the scene. Deputies did not know whether Cordero or his brother, Onesimo Cordero-Casarrabias, 21, was the driver of the Ford Explorer involved in the crash on Eloise Loop Road, a sheriff’s office news release states. Cordero-Casarrabias was not injured.
The Explorer was driving westbound about 6 a.m. on Eloise Loop Road just east of Helena Road when the driver lost control after rounding a curve. The vehicle left the roadway, flipped and ended up on its passenger side facing westbound traffic in the north lane of the roadway, the release states.
A westbound sheriff’s office Ford Crown Victoria patrol car driven by Deputy Isaac Jackson, 25, of Lakeland, struck the Explorer after Jackson took evasive action, the release states. Jackson has been with the sheriff’s office for nine months.
Information on Jackson’s condition was not available Saturday.
The sheriff’s office reported that roads were wet, it was dark and there was fog in the area. Detectives are investigating the crash.
