PLANT CITY - A community center at the Plant City campus of Hillsborough Community College is proving to be a popular place.
The John R. Trinkle Center opened in January 2006 and the college began tracking usage of the facility in October. Since that time, the center has hosted an average of 27 events per month. Those events pulled in an average of 149 people, said campus President Felix Haynes. It took in more than $157,000 in rental fees since it opened.
It was the centerpiece of an $8.6 million construction project at the college. The community, led by city government and Sunshine State Federal Savings and Loan, chipped in more than $1 million for furnishings and equipment.
Haynes recently told members of the Downtown Luncheon Club, an organization of business and community leaders, that the center is complete except for some work on a catering kitchen and garden.
Haynes said the college is developing a marketing plan to encourage more use of the center.
