Columbia Restaurant Fire

TAMPA – Smoke from a dryer forced the brief closure of the Columbia Restaurant’s cigar and gift shop this afternoon, but did not affect the famed restaurant’s operations.

Firefighters were dispatched to the restaurant around 2 p.m. after Columbia President and CEO Richard Gonzmart noticed smoke coming from the roof.

A dryer used in the restaurant’s laundry room apparently caused the smoke, sending smoke through the shops and one dining room, said Gonzmart’s daughter, Andrea.

Firefighters remain at the restaurant, located at 2117 E 7th Ave., blowing smoke from the building.

Andrea Gonzmart said damage was minimal – likely confined only to the dryer.

I’m glad the damage was minimal, I personally toured their wine cellar, it’s the largest collection of Spanish wines I’ve ever seen in my life.  I hope that they are around for another hundred years…

I personally know of two dryer fires caused by people not cleaning the air filter of their dryer after each use.  One of these fires burned the utility room and kitchen extensively.  Please print the findings if the fire at the Columbia Restaurant was a dryer fire.  The public is fairly ignorant of the dangers of uncleaned dryer vents.

That’s a shame.  It can’t be that bad if they’re still open for biz.
