TAMPA - The city has eliminated 236 positions as part of its belt-tightening in the face of reduced property tax revenues.
Of the 236 positions, 115 were vacant. The remaining 121 jobs are being eliminated and those employees are being laid off.
The cuts are expected to save almost $15 million.
In addition, 133 part-time and seasonal jobs are being eliminated, saving another $1 million. The Parks and Recreation Department was among the hardest hit, losing 66 full-time positions.
No police officers or firefighters are being laid off.
Employees being laid off can work another 90 days before their jobs are eliminated. There is no severance pay.
Among the highest ranking jobs being eliminated is one formerly occupied by Fred Hearns, the retired department of community affairs director. In addition, four deputy directors, six managers, and 24 supervisor jobs are being eliminated. Among the managers is Paul Wilborn, the city’s creatiive industries manager, who was paid about $103,000 annually.
In the police department, 34 civilian employees are being eliminated and 13 sworn administrative jobs are being eliminated. In the fire department, 14 administrative positions are being eliminated.
Nobody among Mayor Pam Iorio’s staff is being laid off.

Trim the fat at the top which would allow the little guy to keep his/her jobs. If everyone on the Mayor’s cabinet reduced their salary 5-7%, that would probably save a record number of lower level jobs.
Don’t be selfish, think of someone other than yourself. The Mayor can set the example and reduce her salary.
