TAMPA - Fire investigators have called a suspicious incident Wednesday night at the Towers of Channelside arson, Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman Bill Wade said.
Someone climbed 29 stories and ignited a propane tank in a condominium tower under construction at 1211 E Cumberland Ave., where two towers are being built.
Crews arrived shortly after 11 p.m. and saw a glowing on the top of the western tower from the ground. The fuel in the 20-pound cylinder had burned out by the time firefighters got to the 29th floor, Wade said.
Firefighters found another larger propane tank on the same floor with an open valve and empty tank. No injuries were reported.
Fire marshals and police talked to witnesses at the Channelside entertainment area, who saw someone climb the tower, and later ruled the incident to be arson. Damage was minor, Wade said.
The fire prompted the calling out of five engine companies, two truck companies, two rescue cars and a few chief officers, Wade said About 33 responders were on scene from fire stations across the city.
