TAMPA - A monthlong investigation wrapped up this week with three Tampa residents and three Hondurans facing cocaine charges, Hillsborough County sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said Friday.
Deputies worked with Tampa police, Caribbean authorities and federal agents to identify people smuggling cocaine into the Tampa area from Honduras aboard a small freighter, Carter said.
In Tampa Bay, the freighter crew and local accomplices divided the cocaine and packaged it into smaller quantities.
On Wednesday, a crew member and a local resident sold 2 kilograms of cocaine to an undercover deputy, Carter said.
Authorities arrested six people and seized 3.6 kilograms of cocaine worth about $100,000, Carter said.
Charged with trafficking and conspiracy to traffic were Tampa residents Nilson Mena, 25, Norberto Amezquita, 37, and Rigoberto Gamez-Pereira, 39. Honduras residents Stalyn Mena, 33, Raymond Cooper, 44, and Owen Webster, 39, all face conspiracy charges.
